ORAL CARE

Overview:

The oral cavity contains some of the most varied and vast flora in the entire human body and is the main entrance to two systems, vital for the functioning of human  physiology: the gastro-intestinal and respiratory systems. Several diseases of the two systems manifest in the oral cavity. In addition, specific pathologic conditions, such as periodontitis, may be present in the oral cavity. These specific conditions of the oral cavity may create foci of infection that can affect many other vital systems such as the cardiovascular and renal systems.

Simultaneous drug intake may vary the number and proportion of flora. Concomitant use of medications may alter the overall pattern, atypical organisms begin to predominate and some organisms with a benign nature, such as Candida albicans, become pathogenic. The relative risk of cardiovascular disease is doubled in persons with periodontal disease, which permits organisms to enter deep systemic tissues, such as the carotid atheroma.

Features:

o     Microcidal – effective against 99.99% of bacteria, bacterial spores, viruses and fungi.
o     Effective against biofilm (authors report 65% to 85% of chronic infections e.g. Periodontitis due to biofilm origin).
o     Ensuring microbial load reduction in acute and chronic lesions.
o     No resistance ever reported to hypochlorous acid (HOCl), the active ingredient.
o     Good safety profile LD50 >20 g/Kg. No adverse effects or symptoms have been reported.
o     Contains no alcohol.
o     Isotonic and non-cytotoxic, ensuring fibroblast viability, tissue granulation and epithelialization with minimal scar tissue formation.

Treatment & Prevention:

The goal is to reduce inflammation. The dentist or dental hygienist will clean your teeth; they may use different tools to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth. Careful oral hygiene is necessary after professional tooth cleaning. The dentist or hygienist will show you how to brush and floss. Professional tooth cleaning, in addition to brushing and flossing, may be recommended twice per year or more frequently for severe cases of gum disease.

o    Repair of misaligned teeth or replacement of dental and orthodontic appliances may be recommended.
o    Any other related illnesses or conditions should be treated.
o    Antibacterial mouth rinses or other aids may also be recommended.

DUWL DISINFECTANT

Overview:

DUWL contamination has raised concerns in the dental profession, because very high levels of bacterial contamination have been documented, posing an infection threat to health workers and patients being exposed to air drop inhalation. Counts of between 1  000 and 10  000, and even 1 million, colony-forming units per ml water have been reported.

The Centre for Infection Control in Dental Health Care Settings promotes counts of <500 CFU/ml, whilst the American Dental Association advocates counts of <200 CFU/ml. The most common/dangerous pathogens are E. coli, Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas and Cryptosporidium. The development of biofilm inside the tubing further reduces the efficacy of chemicals as they do not dislodge the biofilm. Using stronger, more hazardous chemicals are only of temporary benefit as the biofilm grows back within days.

Treatment:

We recommend that IQ DUWL Disinfectant be applied in the supply water at a 10% dilution rate (50 ml IQ DUWL Disinfectant with every 500 ml mixed). This will ensure a FAC inclusion rate of approximately 40 ppm/ml, sufficient to:
o    Kill 99.99% of bacteria and other pathogens in the water line;
o    Remove biofilm and all pathogens from inner surface of the tubing;
o    Reduce the risk of human infection significantly.

Features:

IQ DUWL Disinfectant is a novel method for the decontamination of and biofilm removal from Dental Unit Water Lines (DUWL). IQ DUWL Disinfectant is safe, non-cytotoxic and highly effective against water-borne bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa, like Cryptosporidium parvum.
